Love, Hate and Other Filters
Competing crushes, looming decisions about college, and a terrorist attack all factor into Ahmed’s timely debut. Maya Aziz is an Indian American Muslim teen who is fast approaching the end of her senior year and finds herself caught between two worlds. There's the world of her traditional parents who have already chosen a college for Maya and introduced her to a nice "suitable" Muslim boy. Then there's the world of her dreams: studying filmmaking at NYU and dating her longtime crush, Phil. Just as Maya is working up the courage to talk to her parents, a terrorist attack in a nearby town turns her world upside down. Because the suspect bears the name Aziz, Maya and her parents become the targets of local anti-Muslim rage. Suddenly, friends, neighbors and classmates that Maya has known for years are consumed with fear, bigotry, and hatred.
