A Land of Permanent Goodbyes

Atia Abawi

Atia Abawi, (The Secret Sky, 2014) herself a refugee, captures the hope that spurs people forward against all odds and the love that makes that hope grow. Tareq lives with his large and loving family in Syria, a country torn apart from a brutal war. When their village is bombed and their apartment building is destroyed, Tareq, his father, and his four-year-old sister survive, but his mother, grandmother, and three other siblings die in the blast. Threatened by Daesh fighters, the family is forced to flee their homeland and join an endless stream of refugees desperately seeking safety. As the family travels through Turkey and Greece on their way to Germany, a heartbroken Tareq must find the resilience and courage to complete the dangerous journey.
