Henri Samuel : master of the French interior

April 18, 2018
Eerdmans, Emily.
New York : Rizzoli, 2018.
255 pages : illustrations (mostly color) ; 32 cm
Design legend Henri Samuel believed that a successful interior was one in which an observer never suspected that a decorator had been involved. This book takes the reader inside some of Samuel s groundbreaking and inspiring interiors, beginning with his first job assisting Stephane Boudin of Jansen in the 1920s through postwar Paris society and into the go-go 80s. During his illustrious career, Samuel created rarefied and beautiful environments for his jet-set clientele Doris Duke, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, Susan and John Gutfreund, Valentino Garavani, and multiple Rothschilds and Vanderbilts. Such was his expertise that museums such as Versailles and the Metropolitan Museum of Art consulted him on the installation of period rooms. Samuel was a master at reproducing intimate spaces in various historic styles in addition to mixing those styles in an erudite way: modernist paintings were installed over Empire consoles, Louis XIII furniture shared space with Oriental objects, neoclassical chairs were placed beside tables of brass and Plexiglas. This book records Samuel s life, his career, and the luxurious interiors he created for his clients and himself rooms that look as fresh and alive today as they did when they were first arranged.

Home sweet maison : the French art of making a home

March 21, 2018
Postel-Vinay, Danielle, author.
xiv, 273 pages ; 20 cm
My introduction to French homes -- L'entrée -- Le salon -- La salle à manger -- La cuisine -- La laverie -- La salle de bain and la toilette -- Le bureau, la bibliotheque, and les archives -- Le foyer and la cave -- La chambre -- Le boudoir -- Postscript.
How do the French create the elusive and alluring sanctuaries they call home? This question long intrigued Danielle Postel-Vinay. Thanks to a chance encounter with a French expat in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and years of immersive research, she embarked on a quest to discover the secrets of the French home aesthetic. Experiencing first-hand la belle vie, the beautiful life, Postel-Vinay now shows everyone how to create their own French sanctuary, a home sweet maison, no matter where they live. Providing more than just interior decorating and design tips, Postel-Vinay teaches you how to foster the warmth, beauty, and rituals inherent in the French home and create an environment better suited to living a rich, full, connected life. At the center of the book is the idea that your house should be a reflection of you, your hobbies, your family history, your rituals, all the things that make your life unique. A happy home is a home that expresses your rituals and your taste, not one that relies on prefab décor from a mass retailer. Home Sweet Maison encapsulates the very heart of the French way of seeing the world: set the table formally, adhere to all the conventions of ritual and tradition, then take pleasure in indulgence. It's about using French concepts and routines to change our homes, our relationships, and our lives for the better.

A place to call home : tradition, style, and memory in the new American house

October 4, 2017
Schafer, Gil, III, author.
New York, NY : Rizzoli International Publications, 2017.
288 pages : chiefly illustrations, color, plans, black and white ; 32 cm
"Opening with memories of the childhood homes and experiences that have shaped Schafer's own history, ... for Schafer, architecture is not just a career but a way of life, a calling. He describes how the many varied houses of his youth were informed as much by their style as by their sense of place, and how these experiences of home informed his idea of classicism as a set of values that he applies to many different kinds of architecture in places as varied as the ones he grew up in. Because while Schafer is absolutely a classical architect, he is in fact a modern traditionalist, and A Place to Call Home showcases how he effortlessly interprets traditional principles for a multiplicity of architectural styles within contemporary ways of living. Sections in Part I include the delicate balance of modern and traditional aesthetics, the juxtaposition of fancy and simple, and the details that make each project special and livable. Schafer also delves into what he refers to as "the spaces in between," those often overlooked spaces like closets, mudrooms, and laundry rooms, explaining their underappreciated value in the broader context of a home. Part of Schafer's skill lies in the way he gives the minutiae of a project as much attention as the grand aesthetic gestures, and ultimately, it's this combination that brings his homes to life. Part II of the book is the story of seven houses and the places they inhabit--each with a completely different character and soul: a charming cottage completely rebuilt into a casual but gracious house for a young family in bucolic Mill Valley, California; a reconstructed historic 1930s Colonial house and gardens set in lush woodlands in Connecticut; a new, Adirondack camp-inspired house for an active family perched on the edge of Lake Placid with stunning views of nearby Whiteface Mountain; an elegant but family-friendly Fifth Avenue apartment with a panoramic view of Central Park; a new timber frame and stone barn situated to take advantage of the summer sun on a lovely, rambling property in New England; a new residence and outbuildings on a 6,000 acre hunting preserve in Georgia, inspired by the historic 1920s and 1930s hunting plantation houses in the region; and Schafer's own, deeply personal, newly-renovated and surprisingly modern house located just a few feet from the Atlantic Ocean in coastal Maine"--provided by publisher.

Webb, Beth, (Interior designer) author.
New York : Rizzoli, 2017.
254 pages : color illustrations ; 32 cm.
"Beth Webb believes that the most beautiful interiors transcend what we see. Her philosophy of achieving true beauty in the home involves tapping into a deeper place, where sound, touch, taste, and smell also reside. There, nestled between our experiences and memories, are innate personal preferences that must be present before we feel entirely content. Throughout the pages of this lavish book, Beth shows how she realizes individual room, and elegantly composed homes, that offer just such a sense of contentment and well-being. As she leads us through twelve residences from Atlanta to Costa Rica, Beth reveals how she has layered the house's history and the homeowners' past with the way they want to live now. From the palette of crisp blues in a lake house to the smell of the surf drifting through the curtains of a beachside retreat, Beth invites us to discover the design details that facilitate an instinctual sense of home, and a beautiful existence within it."--cover flap.
